What a deal! Matthew is a great piano teacher and we have found these dvds to be so beneficial! we loved them so much for our daughter, that we bought the advanced set as a gift for our Pastor's wife who wanted them. Athough she has played beautifully for many years, she says that she has learned so much and isn't even finished with the lessons, yet!

I just want to let you know how happy I am to have purchased your instructional DVDs. I have known how to play the piano by ear for about 3 years, but I only knew how to play in the key of C and a little in the key of Eb. I didn't want to tackle the task of learning to play in other keys because it seemed so daunting, but with your inversion exercises I have become much more comfortable playing in other keys and I am only on Volume 1! I can't wait to see what more I learn from the other lessons.

Although I have the ability to "play-by-ear" and can read basic melody notes on the treble-staff, I'm strictly self-taught but had reached a plateau with my playing. Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. I especially like the song references in the… "I, ii, iii, IV, V, etc. format. That allows me to easily learn songs in more than one key. I'm now trying out some of your techniques with other songs I would like to learn to play. So far, so good. Thanks for adding some new energy to my playing abilities.

I am now playing in church. The DVDs have helped me to learn new positions and use chords that I had never heard of. These extra chords make the melody easier to understand what you are playing. This program is amazing.

Hi! I just received the Piano By Ear DVDs a week ago and I must confess....I was hesitant at first about ordering them. I haven't finished them, but from what I've seen, I can say that I'm simply amazed. Years ago, I started picking out little pieces. I then started lessons, but my piano teacher started me out at a 3rd year level. Unfortunately, I never received the basics of piano technique. After going through only a few lessons, I'm really catching on. My songs have a "fuller" sound and I'm LOVING it! Thanks Mr. Stephens!

I am so glad I found "piano by ear' website. I purchased the DVD for my 6 year old daughter who is now 7. I was skeptical at first, thinking that a 6 year-old is too young to learn the piano, especially with this method, but I'm so glad I was wrong. Matthew is a genious. His talent combined with patience and dedication produced this awesome website and DVDs. My daughter has finished the first DVD and can play pretty much any simple songs I ask her to play in the key of C, F, and G without reading anything. I am so proud of her and really thankful that Matthew is sharing his talent with the world. If you are skeptical about buying Matt's DVDs, don't be. It really works! Hiya Matt, its me Daz! Yeah ill give you a few minutes to get over the shock lol. I got your Piano By Ear ADVANCED DVD today (22nd jan) and it is class. I watched it all the way through and thought it was brilliant. I have to say I was surprised! You know what im like, since I've played piano lessons for years and even give piano lessons, Im on the internet for hours and hours looking at piano/keyboard websites to learn more. Anyway a lot of sites claim that their lessons are advanced, and to be honest could be learnt by a 7 year old girl in a couple of days! Was that to harsh? oh well lol. Ok im kind of drifting off the point here. Your DVD was excellent mate. I just love that style. Personally I call it honky tonk, i didnt know that it was southern gospel. As you know, i play in many different styles but that is one I never really tried out, well untill now. I recommend everyone who reads this to get it as you will love the runs and fills on this DVD, besides who doesnt like to show off! Oh I was also impressed with your speed. Hi Matthew! What a difference you have made! When I sat down and read lesson #4 it all clicked! Now it makes sense! I never realized there were basic patterns and what the 4 and 5 etc meant. I actually sat down and played my sons choir music that i had already figured out with out the paper and with the melody...then I played Amazing Grace and have to admit I cried whenever I went right into the song "He walks with me". Not perfectly mind you..and it was with just the basic pattern...but the joy I feel to actually sit down and play a song that is on my heart is inconceivable! I never thought I would be able to do it! I am so looking forward to perfecting the basics and then moving on to learning on the fancy little tricks. Thank you so much for offering this to us! You are truly a blessing! I have always wanted to play like my mother in the picture and now with your help I may eventually do so.

I have been playing the piano for over 35 years, and always felt like I constantly gravitated toward playing my music the same way with the same chord structure. I'm so sorry to bother you with this silly stuff but the beginner DVD I already have down fairly well. However, the left hand stuff on Volume 2 is priceless! I'd love it if you put out a DVD on nothing but "filling in the gaps with left hand tricks" (I jest...sort of). Honestly, I wish I'd found you first in my piano journey because the DVD's are that good and would have saved me much time.

After years of trying to play by ear and spending lots of money on instructional materials and teachers without very much success, I am finally making progress. I can also apply what I have learned from Piano By Ear to playing the Mountain Dulcimer by ear. This lets me know that I am actually learning instead of just memorizing songs like I did with other instructional materials. I think of all the time, money, and effort that was wasted over the years with all the other instructional materials that I tried.

Hi Matthew. My daughters and I watched much of lesson one this morning. I kept pausing it so we could go over what you were saying and I was amazed at how quickly both Samantha [almost 6] and Elizabeth [almost 4] picked it all up. They now know how to identify the keys on the piano, and enjoy telling me how to sharp and flat a note. Then right at the end of our 'lesson' we started the C major scale. We are at the first 'pause and practice' and if it wasn't time to have breakfast and get ready for school etc. they would have kept going. I'm so thrilled that they're keen to learn again and are having fun. And it's lovely to be sharing it with them. Samantha is keen to overtake me [I've been a beginner-intermediate for a while so she has a fair way to go] and is really motivated to move forward. But I'm most amazed at Elizabeth, who is having FUN, and in fact she picked up sharps and flats, how to identify C, and the scale quickest!!! I can't wait till tomorrow morning when we reinforce what we did today and keep moving through lesson 1…

Hi Matt, I can't tell you how much you have helped me. I've got all this new knowledge up in my head and the music sounds so great up there. My problem is getting my hands and fingers to follow the new knowledge. I knew how to play G,C and D on the piano but that was about all I Knew. Now that I have had the blessing of working with you, I know a whole lot more. I guess the biggest and most exciting thing I have learned from you is chord inversions. It makes moving around the keyboard so much easier. As you know I sang in a southern gospel quartet for 27 years and as I watched other piano players play in church and in the studio, I watched them with amazement wondering how they could make the piano sound so wonderful. Now I know. It was not just because they were so talented. They also needed a foundation of piano knowledge to go along with their God given talent. I can honestly say I would recommend you to anyone who wants to play the piano by ear. Well, you said you wanted me to keep you posted on my progress and look how long I have talked. Just letting you know I have found your Piano By Ear DVD's really helpful and love the way you teach new techniques. I had been 'fiddling' around on an old piano we had for a few years but not really making any progress. Then at church our regular pianist travelled overseas and soon after my husband, who played the guitar, cut the tip off his finger and was unable to play for a while so we were left with no musicians! I tried to 'make a joyful noise unto the Lord' and was desperately looking around for something to help me play better (quickly!) and came across your website. It was an answer to prayer -no joke! Its hard to say which aspect has been the most helpful, I love playing some of the runs you show and 'walking up the keys', practicing inversions has been the least 'fun' to do but it has helped tremendously in being able to make the songs sound more 'full' rather than single finger playing with the right hand :-)The overhead video shots of you playing are really good too. More of those please! :-) I've still got a way to go before I am playing how I'd really like to be able to and am looking forward to your next DVD, once its available. Thanks for a great product! This piano instruction program is the best by far of all the products that I have used. It will have you playing by ear in no time. And the cost/benefit ratio is highly favorable, i.e., you get a lot more for your money compared to the other commercial products out there. I highly recommend this product!

Hey Matthew, I love your 'Piano By Ear' coarse. It is helping me to reach a higher place in my piano playing I thought I could never reach. In church I usually play the organ and sometimes the piano. However, the main piano player in my church has been gone alot this past month. I took her place on the piano for those services. It thrilled me so much to have people tell me that they could hear a difference in my playing. What was even more exciting is that they liked what they heard. Dear Matthew, Since taking your "Playing by Ear" course it has improved my technique l00%. Matthew, eight years ago I found myself having to leave my job on a medical leave, not realizing that I would never return to a job that I actually loved. For most of those years I sat at home trying to find someway to fill the void in my life. Finally I started to venture into trying to find some instructional music books and DVDs. I must of spent hundred of dollars, almost to the point I was going to giveup on the idea. But I decide to try one more time and about a year and half ago is when I came upon your website. I can honestly say that I was hooked the minute I sat down with the first DVD I purchased. The more I practiced, the harder I found trying to get away from the lessons. Then I had to have DVD#2. I can't begin to tell you the inspiration that I've received from your DVD's. I find myself really tuning in to the music and even improvising with my own touch. I strongly recommend to anyone that is seeking to learn how to play the piano by ear or increasing their musical skills on the piano to look no futher. Finally I must add that not only go I get a lesson when I sitdown at my piano, I am inspired by the music that you have chosen to use in your lessons. I have appreciated the variety of styles Matthew plays and teaches. He has a way of taking the complex sounding music and breaking it down in to simple techniques and yet the music still sounds great! I took lessons from him a few years back and gained a LOT from them. He helped me understand the idea of "mixing" chords which gives some really rich sounds. When I say mixing, I mean the left hand playing one chord or octave while the right hand adds a different chord that blends the two together. This technique is used a lot in the professional stuff! I would recommend anything that Matthew has to sell in the line of piano instruction. In fact, I have gone many times to him at church and asked for changes on a particular song that I had heard on a CD and he would show them to me or sit down and write them out right there with little forethought...just done strictly by ear! In fact, I posted a question about some changes on the discussion board and he emailed the chord changes to me the next day! God has definitely blessed him with the gift of music and it has certainly inspired many young people to want to learn more.

Many people think that playing the piano by ear is only for "gifted” or "musically talented” people. And, you can't play by ear unless you play by note first. That is simply NOT true! I know because I've been teaching people just like you for years!
First, let me explain the difference between playing by note and by ear.
Playing by note involves "reading" music that has been written by another person, the "composer". When the pianist plays by note, he/she just first learn how to "sight read" the music that is written on the sheet music.
Those who play by note usually play ONLY what is written by the composer. This approach is very structured and methodical.
Playing by ear involves using the piano as an instrument to make your own music. Yes, you play songs that other people have written, but you don't have to play each and every note that is written. In fact, you don't need the sheet music.
In fact, when you play by ear, you can play any song you know in whatever key you want! And, as you learn different "styles" of music, you can play the same song in several different styles! YOU have control over what you play and how you play it.
When you play by ear, you use the knowledge you've learn about the piano as an instrument and how it is used to play the songs you love. Now don’t get me wrong, I would never discourage anyone from learning to read notes. It has it's place, but, playing by ear allows YOU to play the piano. You create it, you provide the accompaniment, and you are in charge of how the music sounds.
How I've Taught Hundreds Of People To Play By Ear...And Why You Can Easily Learn My Technique Too!
My name is Matthew Stephens. I've been playing the piano for over 29 years and teaching piano by ear for over 17 years! I first began my relationship with the piano as a little boy when my mother caught me at the piano picking out the tune to "Oh When the Saints Go Marching In".
She showed me a few chords and I began "playing around" with the piano. For several years after that, my mother showed me a few more chords and such but I wanted to learn more.
Soon, my grandmother said she would pay for me to take piano lessons. Hooray! I was so excited until...she hooked me up with a local teacher who taught to PLAY BY NOTE!
I was so frustrated. I didn't want to play by note. I hated it! I just wanted to sit down at the piano and play what I wanted to play. I wanted to play the songs I knew from church without having to read every single note written on that paper.
After a few lessons, my mother convinced my piano teacher to show me a few techniques to play by ear. He agreed ONLY if he could still teach me notes as well. Three teachers later, I was still searching for some solid information that would help me to learn more about playing the piano by ear.
With "little" from my piano teachers, I began piecing together the piano and how it works as an instrument. By the age of 16, I was fully aware of how the piano was used to make music. It just made sense to me. The piano was not as complicated as my teachers were making this all out to be. All their instructional material didn't present the information as I saw it.
Soon I had a few friends at church who wanted me to give their children piano lessons. So, I jotted down some things about scales and chords and such and put it into a chart into the simplest version I could come up with. Then, I started teaching what I felt was the easiest way to understand how to use the piano to play by ear.
Pretty soon, my students doubled and I continued developing an easy course of study teaching ANYONE to play the piano by ear! Now, granted I had to make lots of changes to the course as I developed it, but several students later, I had it down to a T!

Having grown up in a Pentecostal Church, playing the piano by ear was essential. In a Pentecostal Church, there's no way I could read notes quick enough to stay with those foot stomping songs! Plus, the song leader, never sang the song in the key it was written. So, playing for hours at a time, I continued my journey to become an accomplished pianist.
As the years went by, I worked with pianists all across the country who play by ear, adding techniques to my repretoire. I've played at churches all across America and I've played for many important occasions such as weddings and holiday concerts...totally by ear!
And, for the past 17 years I have been the pianist at the local church I attend, playing totally by ear! Although I am able to read music and play by note, I find much more gratification and freedom in playing by ear.
